1) a ring of light encircling the head or body, as in pictures of saints; 2) the glow around the sun, especially during an eclipse or in a mist; corona

 

Renaissance painters eliminated the aureole from their paintings of religious scenes because they believed that man's attention should be directed to the earth.

 

Latin root words: aureolus, aureola, aureolum - golden; aurum, auri, n. - gold; aureus, aurea, aureum - golden
