Sentence Diagramming: Flashcard 3
The words a, an, and the are called articles; a and an are indefinite articles while the is a definite article. Adjectives are words that modify (describe, limit) nouns, pronouns, and equivalent expressions.* An attributive adjective is an adjective that either precedes the word it modifies (an early bird, the next mayor) or comes immediately after it (time enough, someone different). Nouns often function as attributive adjectives, e.g., population density, traffic regulations, achievement test.

A pronoun is a word that takes the place of a noun. There are several kinds of pronouns, including personal pronouns (I, me, you, he, him, she, her, it, we, us, they, them), demonstrative pronouns (this, that, these, those), relative pronouns (who, whom, whose, which, that), interrogative pronouns (who, whom, whose, which, what, whoever, whomever, whatever, whosoever, etc.) reflexive and intensive pronouns (myself, yourself, himself, herself, itself, ourselves, yourselves, themselves), indefinite pronouns (someone, somebody, anyone, anybody, everyone, everybody, etc.), and reciprocal pronouns (each other, one another). In general, pronouns are not modified by attributive adjectives; notable exceptions are interrogative and indefinite pronouns followed by the adjective else (who else, what else, anyone else).

On the right is a diagram of the sentence "A large passenger jet will be landing." The subject, jet, is modified by the indefinite article a, the adjective large, and the noun passenger, which functions here as an adjective. All articles, attributive adjectives, and nouns used as adjectives are diagrammed on slanted lines attached to the base line below the nouns they modify. Flashcard 4: adverbs.
* Just what these "equivalent expressions" are will become clear as you make your way through these flashcards.
